Queen Máxima Awards Prince Bernhard Culture Prize

Today, Monday November 30, Her Majesty Queen Máxima handed over the Prince Bernhard Culture Prize 2015 at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ concert hall in Amsterdam. The award went to architect Francine Houben.

Francine Houben, born in Sittard in 1955, is a Dutch architect, founding partner and creative director of Mecanoo architecten, an architecture firm founded in 1984. Mrs Houben received this award for her decades-long track record as a leading international architect. Francine Houben and her architecture firm are active all over the world: she had commission for the New York Public Library, the Library of Birmingham and the renovation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington. In 2014 she was named “Woman Architect of the Year” by the British Architects’ Journal.

The prize of the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund is a sum of 75,000 euros with an addition of another 75,000 euros that the winner can use as capital of a culture fund. Francine Houben decided to donate the 75,000 euros to the Eye Opener Funds for the innovation of libraries.

At the ceremony was also present Princess Laurentien.

The Prince Bernhard Cultural Prize is awarded to individuals or institutions that have made success in the field of music, theater, dance, visual arts, history, literature, heritage, cultural or nature conservation. The Prince Bernhard Culture Fund was created in London in 1940 by Prince Bernhard, husband of Queen Juliana.
