The Emperor of Japan today celebrated his 82nd birthday, and was warmly celebrated by his family and the Japanese public.
Appearing on the balcony of the Imperial Palace’s Chōwaden Reception Hall, Emperor Akihito briefly addressed the crowd of around 23,000 that had gathered below, wishing that “the coming year will be a bright one for everybody.” Empress Michiko, the Crown Prince Couple and Prince and Princess Akishino were also present on the balcony.
An interview with the Emperor – who has been on the throne since 1989 – was published to mark his birthday. He spoke mostly about the victims of the Second World War and how it “pains me deeply to think of the many who lost their lives” because they “could have led meaningful lives in various areas of society”. The Emperor stated that “having thorough knowledge about the last war and deepening our thoughts about the war is most important for the future of Japan.”Filed under Japanese Royals
