Yesterday, Thursday December 17, Her Majesty Queen Máxima was present at the ceremony of the award Prix de Rome 2015 at the Appel Arts Centre in Amsterdam.

The winner of this year was visual artist Magali Reus, who received the award from Jet Bussemaker, the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science. She was awarded a cash prize of 40,000€ and a work period at the American Academy in Rome.

Magali Reus won for her new work called “Leaves”: a series of five large inflated objects reminiscent of padlocks. The international jury of the award was impressed by her “unexplainable, but nice peculiarity” artwork.

Prix de Rome is the oldest award in The Netherlands for artists under 40 years and was introduced in 1808 by Louis Napoleon. The purpose of the Prix is to identify talented artists and to encourage them to further develop and increase their visibility. Since 2013, the award is organized and funded by the Mondriaan Fund.
