Norway Celebrates King Harald’s Silver Jubilee

Norway’s King Harald V has celebrated his silver jubilee today with a series of events in Oslo. The day began with a church service in the Palace Chapel, which the entire royal family attended, as did their guests from overseas: Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. Bishop Helga Haugland Byfuglien, the President of the Norwegian Church, officiated the service and Princess Märtha Louise gave a reading.








Later on, King Harald – who took the throne on January 17, 1991 upon the death of his father, Olav V (you can read a biography of the late King here) – and his family spent time at the ‘winter sports arena’ erected in front of the Royal Palace.

Queen Sonja, Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Princess Ingrid Alexandra each had a go at the cross-country skiing section, while the Crown Princely Family then took part in some luge course. The royal family appeared on the Palace balcony to thank the gathered crowd.

In the late afternoon the Norwegian Government presented the monarch with his jubilee gift, a concert at the University Hall. A dinner was later held at the Royal Palace, with a few photographs released of King with his guests
