On This Day: Henry VIII Marries Third Wife, Jane Seymour

Back in 1536 – the year dubbed that of the ‘Three Queens’ – Henry VIII of England took his third wife, Jane Seymour, in holy matrimony (well, as holy as any marriage of Henry VIII’s could be!).

They were married on May 30 in the Queen’s Closet at Whitehall Palace by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer. The private ceremony was held a mere eleven days after the execution of the King’s former wife, Anne Boleyn. According to David Starkey, part of Jane’s vows to Henry included a promise to be “bonny and buxom in bed and board”.

Queen Jane was the only one of Henry VIII’s six wives to provide him with a son, an heir to the throne. Prince Edward was born in October 1537, but his birth also brought Jane’s death – the Queen developed postnatal complications from her drawn-out labour and died twelve days later on October 24.

She was buried at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Henry VIII was buried beside her upon his own death in 1547.
