March 24, 2016 at 6:02 pm by JessRulzFor the first time since 1959, the Royal Maundy Service took place today – Maundy Thursday – at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.
Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, handed out red and white purses filled with coins, the Maundy Money, to 90 men and 90 women who were selected from across the country to recognise their service for their communities and the Church.

The red purse this year contains a £5 coin minted to commemorate the Queen 90th birthday and a 50p coin made in honour of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. The white purse, as per tradition, contains silver penny pieces that total the Queen’s age.

Among the recipients this year was Tim Donovan, who is known for his royal engagement count that published at the end of each year in The Times. He said it was “marvellous” to be part of the service.
The Queen, whose 90th birthday is next month, looked gleeful attending the service in a turquoise tweed coat with lace trim over a wool crepe suit designed by Karl Ludwig, topped with a matching Angela Kelly hat.
