Media Links Prince William’s Foreign Office Speech to the Brexit

The Duke of Cambridge has been unwittingly drawn into the ‘Brexit’ debate in the United Kingdom, with the British media linking a speech he gave at a reception at the Foreign Office today as being supportive of the country remaining in the European Union.

“For centuries, Britain has been an outward looking nation. Hemmed in by sea, we have always sought to explore what is beyond the horizon…In an increasingly turbulent world, our ability to unite in common action with other nations is essential. It is the bedrock of our security and prosperity and is central to your work. Right now, the big questions with which you wrestle — in the UN, NATO, the Middle East and elsewhere — are predicated on your commitment to working in partnership with others,” he said, comments which were interpreted by the media as pro-European Union.

Britain's Prince William, Duke of Cambridge makes a speech as he visits the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on February 16, 2016 in London, England. During the visit Tuesday to mark the first anniversary year of the FCO's Diplomatic Academy, William gave a speech, presented awards and visited the crisis centre room to see how their staff respond in the aftermath of international deadly attacks or natural disasters.
Kensington Palace denied the speech was intended to have any meaning linked to the European Union – “This speech was not about Europe. He does not mention the word Europe once,” a spokesperson said. The actual purpose of the event was to mark the first anniversary of the Foreign Office’s Diplomatic Academy, where Prince William also delivered awards to outstanding people in the diplomatic staff.
