Today marks the 35th anniversary of the engagement announcement of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.
Speculation had mounted over several months whether or not they would get engaged, resulting in ever-increasing media interest and speculation. Finally, Buckingham Palace made the song awaited announcement in a statement which read:
“It is with greatest pleasure that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved son the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the Earl Spencer and the Honourable Mrs Shand Kydd.”
The couple then gave an interview and took a walk around the gardens of the palace where the engagement ring could be seen in all it’s glory. Now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, the stunning ring consisted of a large oval sapphire surrounded by fourteen diamonds. It was actually rather unusual for a royal engagement ring because it formed part of a collection created by the Crown Jewellers, Garrards, available for anyone to buy, rather than being a bespoke piece.
The couple’s interview all those years ago seems very poignant today. Lady Diana was rather shy and spoke in soft tones, whilst Charles, being more used to the attention, seemed confident in front of the cameras. Infamously, when the interviewer stated that they must be in love, there was a degree of uncertainty on Charles’ part as to what love actually was…..the rest, as they say, is history..
