The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today paid a visit to Harrow College, where they met with organisers and volunteers of the charity Mind, which provides assistance to those suffering from mental health issues.

Arranged to mark World Mental Health Day (held annually on October 10 since 1992), William and Kate participated in a workshop with young people who themselves have battled with mental health problems. Some of these people now also volunteer with the Time to Change initiative, a campaign aiming to reduce the stigma of mental health problems.

A number of the young people – many still in their teens – told the Duke and Duchess about their diagnoses, how it made them feel, and their experiences afterwards. “I’m here today to celebrate how far we’ve come but to remind people that it is okay to talk without being afraid or ashamed,” Vithuja Balasingham, 19, said of her battle with depression.

Prince William heavily praised all those involved in the workshop, and in the charities, saying that “if we can get more young people talking…then we can really get mental health to the fore, which is where it should be.”
