The Duke of Cambridge tonight helped one of the charities closest to his heart celebrate their 21st birthday at a fundraiser held at London’s Banqueting House.
He has been patron of Child Bereavement UK, which provides support and education to families with dying children and children who are facing bereavement, since 2008, and delivered a speech at the dinner praising the charity’s work since its inception.

“What my mother recognised back then – and what I understand now – is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure. But my mother was determined to help those in need and she would have been immensely proud – as I am – of all that Child Bereavement UK has achieved these last 21 years,” he said, “CBUK – and I don’t know how they do this – brings warmth, comfort, a guiding hand, a way through, even colour and joyfulness, and a renewed opportunity for love as a family reknits itself after tragedy.”

Singer Gary Barlow provided musical entertainment for the dinner, and posed for photos with Prince William.
Child Bereavement UK was started in September 1994 by Jenni Thomas and Julia Samuel, and the Duke’s late mother, Diana Princess of Wales, was in attendance for its launch.
