UNESCO-IOC gets involved in Yeosu Project

UNESCO, the Organizing Committee for Yeosu Expo 2012 and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) signed a cooperation agreement on Monday, 12 December 2011 in Paris. This is part of the Yeosu Project to support developing countries in their efforts to achieve sustainable development of the oceans and coasts.

This funding is part of the Republic of Korea’s appreciation for hosting the 2012 Exposition in Yeosu. KOICA oversees the execution of the project which consists of two components: 

• A capacity enhancing training through research activity targeted at developing nations in South East Asia. It is an initiative within the framework of the IOC- Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) international - International Science Programme on the Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) in Asia; and
• A support action for the development of a road-map for the establishment of an IOC Sub-Commission for Africa and adjacent Island States.
