Enthronement ceremony for Emperor to begin

Leaders of Japan and dignitaries from around the world are here in Tokyo to witness something not seen in a generation, with traditions dating back centuries. In a short while, Emperor Naruhito will formally proclaim his enthronement.

He took the throne in May, but today his accession will be celebrated.

Dignitaries are arriving at the palace to hear the Emperor's proclamation. He will speak from the throne in the State Hall.

The Prime Minister will follow with a congratulatory message on behalf of the public. He'll then lead three rounds of banzai, a traditional Japanese exclamation wishing a long life.

Earlier today, the Emperor visited the Imperial Palace sanctuaries, where he reported to the Sun Goddess, the souls of his ancestors, and various deities that the enthronement ceremony would be held.

The Empress also separately visited the three sanctuaries.

The ritual was attended by Crown Prince and Princess Akishino and other Imperial family members, as well as the country's leaders.
